During the school year, we studied the 1800's. We began by studying about the War of 1812, moving onto the Santa Fe Camino Real, Abraham Lincoln's life, and reading the Little House on the Prairie series. Close to Christmas time I read the first half of Little Women.
To celebrate our study, I planned a Little Women party for the children.
For the party Mako was Theodore Lawrence, Evie was Josephine March (apple eating, late night writing and reading of course), Clara was prim and proper Meg and sweet Rosamund was Amy March.
Our Pickwick Portfolio! Mako submitted a very well done drawing of the USS Monitor vs. the CSS Virginia. Clara drew an adorable cat popping out of a top hat while Evie wrote a beautiful poem about a Mare with a wonderful drawing. Rosamund submitted a drawing of each of the Little Women characters. We will treasure the little newspaper for years to come.
The menu was inspired by the Little Women's trip boating and to the beach: a majestic turkey sub sandwich, cherries and berries, pain au lat, fancy little cookies. For dessert I baked an apple cider donut bundt cake, peach galette, little apple turnovers and the dreamy heaps of strawberry ice cream.
Our beautiful picnic basket was a gift from Aunt Lindsay a couple of years ago. In the 2019 version of the film, these very picnic baskets were used. The company is 150 years old and located on the East Coast.
I pulled out our feminine summer quilts as decor fit for the March sisters.
The movie also features a fabulous bowl of pink ice cream that I just had to recreate.
"Teddy" and "Jo" reenact a silly dance.
It was a memorable end to our school year. I just hope they all remember a little of all we read and studied.
